“Daniel Adamson” Arrives in
Liverpool
The
historic 1903
Manchester
Ship Canal
tug-tender “Daniel Adamson” was moved from
Ellesmere Port
to
Liverpool
in a two stage
operation which commenced on Thursday April 8th and completed on
Saturday April 10th.
On
Thursday “Daniel Adamson” was removed from the dock at the
Boat
Museum
,
Ellesmere Port
and towed by
ship canal tug “M.S.C. Viceroy” to Eastham Locks.
The
move to
Liverpool
was completed
on Saturday afternoon when “Ashgarth” of Svitzer Marine towed “Daniel
Adamson” out of Eastham Locks at
17:55
down the
Mersey
to
Liverpool
. This was
believed to be the first time “Daniel Adamson” had sailed on the
Mersey
in 60 years.
Arrival
in
Liverpool
at Langton Lock
was around
18:45
. From Langton
Lock, “Daniel Adamson” was moved through the dock system by “Ashgarth”
and “Pollgarth” to the entrance of Clarence Graving Dock, where she was
made fast shortly after 20:00.
The
next stage of the project will see the “Daniel Adamson” entering dry dock
for a hull survey.
The
departure of “Daniel Adamson” from Eastham Locks also marked the official
handover of the vessel by the Manchester Ship Canal Company, part of the Peel
Holdings Group, to the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society.
DAPS
Chairman Tony Hirst and DAPS Director Dan Cross formally accepted the vessel
from Manchester Ship Canal Company representative Captain Don Morgan at
Eastham Locks.

“Daniel
Adamson” is a unique twin screw steam tug-tender constructed for the
Shropshire
Union
Canal
and Railway
Company by the Tranmere Bay Development Company of
Birkenhead
in 1903. She is
listed on the National Register of Historic Vessels and is the sole survivor of
her type.

Originally named “Ralph Brocklebank” the vessel was
purchased by the Manchester Ship Canal Company in 1921 where she served as the
company’s hospitality tender carrying guests and dignitaries on official
tours of the canal until late 1984 when she was retired from service. Since
then she has been a static exhibit at the
Boat
Museum
,
Ellesmere
Port.

The Daniel Adamson Preservation Society, a not for profit
organisation, was formed on 21st February 2004 with the aim of
saving this historic vessel and restoring her
to her former glory and to see her active again within the Cheshire and
Merseyside areas.
