Historic Tug – Tender “Daniel Adamson” Sails to Liverpool

The historic Manchester Ship Canal tug-tender “Daniel Adamson” is to be moved from the Boat Museum Ellesmere Port to Liverpool during the week beginning April 05.

The move will be undertaken on or after Tuesday [April 06] following the completion of the necessary formalities. The vessel has been cleared by a marine surveyor for the tow across the Mersey to Liverpool though this is subject to certain weather restrictions.

The “Daniel Adamson” will be towed to Eastham Lock by Manchester Ship Canal tugs. From Eastham, across the Mersey , towage will be undertaken by Svitzer Marine, two of a number of companies and individuals who have supported the project to date.

This is an historic voyage for the “Daniel Adamson” as it is believed to be the first time that she has left the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal in 60 years.

On arrival in Liverpool the tug will be dry docked by North Western Shipbuilders and Ship Repairers at Clarence Graving Docks where a full survey of the vessel will be undertaken.

Notes for Editors:

v      Please contact Dan Cross or Tony Hirst for details of the exact date and time of movement – see contact information below.

v      “Daniel Adamson” is a unique twin screw steam tug-tender constructed for the Shropshire Union Canal and Railway Company by the Tranmere Bay Development Company of Birkenhead in 1903. She is listed on the National Register of Historic Vessels and is the sole survivor of her type.

v      Originally named “Ralph Brocklebank” the vessel was purchased by the Manchester Ship Canal Company in 1921 where she served as the company’s hospitality tender carrying guests and dignitaries on official tours of the canal until late 1984 when she was retired from service. Since then she has been a static exhibit at the Boat Museum , Ellesmere Port.

v      The Daniel Adamson Preservation Society, a not for profit organisation, was formed on 21st February 2004 with the aim of saving this historic vessel and restoring her  to her former glory and to see her active again within the Cheshire and Merseyside areas.

v      The Society would like to acknowledge the support of Svitzer Marine, The Manchester Ship Canal Company, North Western Ship Builders and Repairers, Liverpool Pilots and the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company and a number of other organisations and individuals.
