In my
last update I mentioned that when re-laying the ply covers on the aft deck we
exposed the 'Hayward' deck lights, which had been previously only visible from
the underside (within the aft accommodation area) and promised that when some
photos were available we would add these to the site.
The
photos are now ready, thanks to George Pennington and are shown here (Photos 1
& 2) These two photos show just one of the four decklights removed (for
restoration) and is one of the smaller of the two sizes fitted (there are 2 of
each size) I hope to provide a comparative view of both types in the near
future.
In the
interim I have been in touch with Ian Macky in the USA, producer of the
specialist website
www.glassian.org which contains a wealth of details on all sorts of glass
prisms, glass insulators and so on. If you haven't already visited Ian's site,
I commend it to you for some fascinating reading. Perhaps not surprisingly Ian
has amongst his collection some examples of 'Hayward's'
products, including a deck light very like ours and in the background a more
conventional pavement light by the same company.
I am
obliged to Ian for bringing the following website to my attention, it is
certainly worth a visit, [Click

As will
be seen the ill fated 'Titanic' shared yet another feature with the 'Daniel
Adamson' in that she too had 'Hayward
Lights'.
In the
case of the former vessel, no doubt the damage caused to the glass block lenses
occurred either during the vessel's sinking or in the recovery process from the
sea bed, certainly not wanton vandalism as is the case of the 'DA'. All being
well we hope to replace the damaged lenses and re-install the restored
decklights as yet one more unique feature of this remarkable vessel.
