Two photographs from
the collection of David Bradbury of Rugeley, Staffs.
Both photographs were
taken on Sunday 27th September 1969, when David travelled on a 'Mersey
Ferry Cruise' of the Manchester Ship Canal, aboard the Wallasey
Corporation ferry 'Egremont' (or possibly 'Leasowe')
The first shows an
excellent view of the 'Daniel Adamson' alongside 'Old Quay' Runcorn,
looking very majestic and in excellent condition. The vessel in the
background is believed to be the MSC.Co's bucket dredger 'Gowy'
The second photo is
more of a puzzler. No not the location, as it's patently the
lock/gatekeeper's office at Barton. It is the instrument to the left of
the entrance door. We do know that the instrument is or was used to
indicate the levels in the lock, but as one assumes there were normally
just two levels, i.e. high and low, can anybody suggest the purpose of
the numerous graduations on the indicator panel? If you know, please add
a line to our 'Guest Book' page, sorry there are no prizes on offer, but
it would be interesting to know the details.
We know that the
carefully polished plaque at the extreme left of the photo was awarded
for best kept garden, but does anyone know the history of this practice?
