Regarding the September 1969 picture of Barton Lock Office. The dial showed the depth of the canal above the locks. The Lockmaster could easily read the gage, and adjust the sluice gates accordingly, otherwise he would need to walk to the top gates and read the depth from the outer lock wall. I worked at Irlam and Barton locks, also briefly on the tugs and in Shipping Movements at the Dock Office until 1972.

G Day I am trying to locate an old friend, John Luxton. We served together on HMS Eagle 1965 66. Some of those photos reminds me of his engineering knowledge. Heres hoping. Malcolm

AS AN EX TUGMAN AS A LAD ON THE MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL I WAS ONE OF A GROUP OF LADS WHO USED TO BE SENT EVERYDAY TO LOOK AFTER THE DANIEL ADAMSON. WE USED TO DO THE BRASSWORK AND SCRUB THE DECKS AND GENERALLY LOOK AFTER HER. IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES SHE WAS USED ON THE CANAL AS A PARTY BOAT ON THE CANAL OFTEN BERTHING OUTSIDE BRIDGEWATER HOUSE WHERE GUESTS WERE ENTERTAINED BEFORE FINISHING THEIR TRIP.ITS GREAT TO SEE THIS HISTORIC STEAM TUG BEING RESTORED. GOOD LUCK WITH THE HARD WORK.
