Binnacle Restoration Work

Photographs © George Pennington 2005

George Pennington has been working to restore the Daniel Adamson's binnacle to something of it's former glory.

George comments: " It would appear that at some stage the bottom has been reattached to the main part of the structure. The two lamp boxes on the side are in need of a bit of TLC, there has been an attempt in the past to re secure the sides of one of them. The starboard side is the one with the lid.

The interior of the bowl still requires some work doing to it, but most of the old paint has now been removed. However the tarnish that has formed over the years presented a problem.

A good Copper Smith would come in handy to re-solder the seams on the boxes. If you look close enough at the photo, an attempt at one stage to repair the port side using pop rivets and a copper bracket has been made. This has proved un-successful.
