Daniel Adamson is a steam powered tug-tender, built in 1903 as the Ralph Brocklebank, by the Tranmere Bay Development Co., at Birkenhead , for the Shropshire Union Railways & Canal Co.  Bought by the Manchester Ship Canal Co. in 1921, then sumptuously re-fitted and renamed in 1936, as their hospitality tender for dignitaries on official tours, until retired in 1984.

After retirement, a mooring was provided at Ellesmere Port by the Boat Museum , but lack of ownership led to gradual deterioration,  exacerbated by vandals, with safety issues leading to a decision to scrap the vessel.

The Daniel Adamson Preservation Society was formed in February 2004 with the objective of restoring her to her former glory and capable of active passenger carrying.

The Society is a Company limited by guarantee with charitable status and now owns the Daniel Adamson.

Local businesses have given tremendous support, facilitating her transfer to Liverpool, dry docking, the undertaking of hull painting, some repairs, providing other free services and equipment valued at over £35,000.

The Historically important Daniel Adamson is now being restored

In the last two years over 11,000 hours of volunteer labour have been expended on the tug, working in all areas to undertake work towards her restoration.  At the end of 2005 funding was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund  plus donations from other organization and individuals to fund a £72,000 series of surveys to determine the work and cost to return her to operational standard while maintaining her historic integrity.

Regular working parties take place twice a week, normally on Tuesdays and Saturdays; your involvement would be very welcome or in other Society activities.

Further information and regular progress reports can be found online at  www.danieladamson.co.uk.

The Society newsletter, "The Tow Line"’ is posted to all members four times a year with all immediate news and progress with restoration posted on the web site.

The work undertaken by as well as donations from members and others have made the project possible along with loans and grants means that  we are secure, but more money is needed to fund further work.

Thank you in anticipation for supporting this important project.
